ECUMEN PRESIDENT AND CEO
Reporting to the Ecumen Board of Trustees, the President and Chief Executive Officer is responsible for overall senior leadership and working with the Board of Trustees, Members Assembly, and Executive Leadership Team to develop long-range goals and implement multi-year objectives and strategies. The President and CEO will provide effective direction, advancement, and stewardship of Ecumen’s Mission, Promise, Vision, and Values.
Bringing high energy, bold vision, and exceptional critical-thinking skills to the position and demonstrable passion for Ecumen’s faith-based mission supporting older adults and their families, the President and CEO will lead collaborative efforts to maximize resources, ensure financial resilience, and drive intentional growth and development.
The President and CEO will serve as Ecumen’s chief ambassador and spokesperson in advancing communications and connections with key leaders, constituents, stakeholders, partners, and the broader community. The President and CEO will be directly engaged in targeted advocacy initiatives and efforts to expand and diversify public and private sector financial support for organizational sustainability and major priorities.

POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES

Strategic Planning and Vision
- Lead the development, implementation, and communication of current and emerging strategic plans, programs, and services in partnership with Ecumen’s Board of Trustees, Executive Leadership Team, and other team members, stakeholders, and partners.
- Actively manage the organization’s strategic plans through systematic evaluation of quantitative outcomes against key metrics and performance indicators, selective incorporation of contingencies, and timely refinements based on emerging trends, opportunities, and challenges.
- Evaluate the relevance and applicability of industry, sector, and market analyses, competitor assessments, and stakeholder feedback on strategic priorities, plans, programs, and operations.
Leadership and Organizational Culture
- Lead and inspire a dynamic workforce and workplace environment and build ownership in the active management of priorities and strategies and in the individual and collective evaluation and responses to key results.
- Strengthen competencies in cross-division collaboration and promote cooperation, trust, open-mindedness, and mutual respect across the organization.
- Integrate transparency and accountability within a culture of excellence, acknowledgement and recognition, intentional partnerships, and innovation.
Operational Leadership and Management
- Maintain responsibility for comprehensive operations to ensure the organization’s mission, vision, and values remain at the forefront of talent development objectives, financial strategies, business decisions, and resource allocations.
- Mentor and motivate Executive Leadership Team members overseeing Finance; Legal Affairs; Nursing and Operations; People Services (Human Resources); Mission Advancement; Marketing and Communications; and Customer Experience and Wellbeing functions.
- Guide the evolution of an increasingly effective, change-ready organization through the deliberate alignment of major goals, key performance indicators, and evaluation methodologies.
Financial Leadership and Stewardship
- Work effectively with Ecumen’s Chief Financial Officer, Board of Trustees, Finance, Budget and Investment Committee, and other advisors and experts to ensure financial sustainability, make informed and timely decisions impacting profitability and stability, and connect resource allocations with major priorities.
- Forecast and evaluate complex strategic issues and drive the development of plans to take advantage of emerging opportunities and contingencies to mitigate risks.
- Engage in annual budget preparations and the development of multi-year projections to build consensus on growth and investment priorities and on any decisions for the downsizing or elimination of specific operations, programs, and/or services.
Risk Management and Compliance
- Steward the organization’s compliance with all appropriate government and industry standards, guidelines, and regulations impacting nonprofit providers, developers, and operators of senior living spaces and innovative services.
- Anticipate resource and response requirements for potential risks and liabilities and facilitate the formulation of strategies and contingencies to mitigate or circumvent financial, operational, and other strategic threats.
- Sustain organizational vigilance to address legal risks, ensure the safety and well-being of residents and staff, maintain operational efficiency and financial resilience, and initiate risk management protocols and practices as warranted.
New Business Development
- Evaluate opportunities for growth, expansion, and/or diversification including new potential markets, programs, and services; partnerships and alliances; and internal process and capacity-building improvements.
- Ensure all prospective pursuits and decisions are supported by the following:
- Financial and operational due diligence
- Cost-benefit analyses
- Measurable objectives
- Compatibility with existing and other emerging programs and services
- Evaluations of opportunity costs associated with resource requirements and allocations
- Timely assessments of progress against projected outcomes
External Stakeholder and Partner Engagement
- Serve as Ecumen’s primary spokesperson in the clear and persuasive articulation of its mission, vision, attributes, accomplishments, and strategic directions as an integral part of a comprehensive outreach and communications plan.
- Expand brand awareness to promote and differentiate Ecumen’s organizational profile in a highly competitive and dynamic environment with leaders, stakeholders, and partners; residents, patients, and family members; contributors and funders, and government and public officials.
- Broaden the organization’s engagement with the pursuit and diversification of philanthropic commitments given their increasing importance to the organization’s resilience, viability, and evolution.
- Engage in direct cultivation, formal requests for financial support, and stewardship of private contributions and public funding supporting fundamental mission fulfillment and aspirations for sustainability, growth, and innovation.
- Sustain trusted and symbiotic relationships with Lutheran religious leaders including the Members Assembly and Catholic religious members of the Sisters of the Order of Saint Benedict.
- Maintain a leadership presence and voice across Ecumen communities through representation and service on key industry and sector boards and associations and the strategic involvement of leadership team colleagues.
Advocacy
- Lead the implementation of targeted advocacy initiatives and communications with local, state, and federal government entities and agencies to advance Ecumen’s mission, aspirations, and funding priorities.
- Cultivate relationships with elected officials, regulatory agencies, and industry and sector partners to shape and influence public policies and funding streams serving the best interests of the organization.
- Ensure legislative and regulatory developments are consistently and proactively monitored and communicated to leaders, colleagues, and advocates positioned for response and action.
Governance and Board Relations
- Steward relationships with the Ecumen Board of Trustees, board committees, and individual board members to generate confidence, collaborations, and engagement through open, responsive, and purposeful interactions, communications, and information.
- Partner closely with the Board of Trustees in the development, pursuit, and realization of Ecumen’s strategic goals and priorities and with ongoing efforts to respond to emerging opportunities and challenges.
- Engage directly and substantively in the identification, cultivation, recruitment, and onboarding of new Board of Trustees members.
REQUIRED POSITION QUALIFICATIONS
- Master’s degree or higher.
- Minimum of fifteen years’ progressively responsible experience in leading and/or managing a large, complex organization and a sizable, diverse, creative, and dynamic team.
- Experience leading the development, implementation, assessment, and adaptation of comprehensive strategic plans.
- Ability to translate opportunities and strategies into measurable objectives and targeted outcomes.
- Strong analytical skills to assess trends, opportunities, and challenges and proficiencies in the integration of diverse perspectives and the facilitation of meaningful engagement in strategy development and implementation.
- Solid business and financial acumen.
- Demonstrated record of leadership, experience, and accomplishments in building, empowering, and motivating high-performing teams.
- Commitment to and competence in creating and strengthening industry, sector, and community partnerships toward shared goals and benefits.
- Experience with successful private and public sector revenue generation.
- Strong working knowledge of industry trends, requirements, and regulations impacting providers, developers, and operators of senior living spaces and innovative services for older adults.
- Familiarity and experience with nonprofit organizations.
- Effective interpersonal, active listening, and consensus-building skills.
- Openness, professional integrity, sound judgment, and high ethical standards.
- Mastery of written, verbal, and virtual communications, addresses, and presentations.
SALARY & BENEFITS INFORMATION
POSITION SALARY
The starting salary range for this position is between $450,000 and $550,000 with an opportunity for a performance-based bonus.
